October in New Mexico is really beautiful. The days are still warm, while the nights cool down enough to let you sip a warm beverage and sit by a fire, if you have one.
It’s the perfect time to take a hike with a naturalist. Or better yet, a self proclaimed “nature nerd”. I packed up the girls and we headed north three hours to Farmington to visit Dawn of Simple Things Notebook. We were warmly welcomed with paleo brownies and viewing of one really awesome insect specimen collection built by Dawn’s daughter.
After eating almost all the brownies we all put on boots and headed out for adventure. She and her wonderful kids took us to their favorite spot, the nature center along the river and within minutes of arriving we saw a mule deer and then mallard ducks. One of the biggest treats was seeing these Canadian geese close up.
Their tracks we mixed in the mud with raccoon tracks. If only we had had one of Dawn’s castings kits with us!
The variety of plant life at the nature center was just stunning. I could have stayed there all day had the girls not wanted lunch. So after much exploration and several adventures into the mud we headed to a local park to have a picnic lunch and a bit of play time.
After lunch we said goodbye and headed up to Durango for dinner. The fall colors along the Animas were even more stunning than in Farmington. Especially in the late afternoon it felt like the trees were glowing from the inside out.
Meeting Dawn was like meeting an old friend after a long time apart. It was easy to start up our conversation and really hard to say goodbye. There were so many things left un-talked about. We probably could have used two more days before we would have exhausted the conversation. It was fantastic to meet a kindred spirit in real life, and I hope we get to meet in person one day again. The girls didn’t want to leave and neither did I. It was one of those days that made you feel “High on Life”.
When you write a blog and read other blogs and are active in commenting you begin to develop a friendship with people and this meet up just proves that yes you can make friends, real friends online! Yay for blogger meet ups!!
